What this change means
Earth replaces the lake above as the fourth and fifth lines move, and a tree begins to rise from beneath it. The fifth line leads, warning that cultivating ties with those above while ignoring those you lead keeps success small. The fourth complements it: help can come from below and lift the ridgepole, if you keep giving and receiving in balance. Both lines turn your attention downward. The resulting hexagram, 46 Going Up, describes a rise that's the fruit of dedicated work, in which seeking an important person's help can bring great success. So the climb has two directions. You can ask for support from above, and you should, but it's the people beneath you who keep you rising. Treat them fairly, give back what you receive, and the ascent rests on something solid.

- Line 5 of 28 Excesses
When you focus on strengthening ties with those above you but forget to pay attention to those you lead, your success will be limited.

- Line 4 of 28 Excesses
You can receive help from those under you now, but if you take advantage of it and there's no balance between giving and receiving, they'll withdraw their support and there will be loss.
The ridgepole rises. Good fortune. If there is something else, distress.
- The judgment of 28 Excesses
You're in a situation that calls for extraordinary measures to keep what you've achieved from collapsing. Check and strengthen the foundations that hold up your projects, take innovative action and step out of your comfort zone. That way your success is assured; otherwise, loss can't be avoided.
The ridgepole sags. It is favorable to have somewhere to go. Success.
- The judgment of 46 Going Up
You're in a time of rising, and this rise is the fruit of work you've done with dedication. Seeking the help of an important person will bring great success; don't be afraid of that meeting, because everything is favorable now.
Great success. Seeing the great person is of use. Do not worry. Setting out southward brings good fortune.
