Nourishment becomes Inaction

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

Clouds rise up to heaven as four lines move, and the jaws must wait for the meal instead of reaching for it. Only the first and fourth lines of 5 Inaction, the resulting hexagram, hold still, and they frame what follows. The first says you still have control over the situation, so move with ease while watching events closely. The fourth is starker: any kind of action now will only make things worse. Put together, they describe watchful calm. You can tend daily matters lightly, but this isn't the moment for decisive moves. The resulting hexagram adds that waiting is preparation, and its image is of eating, drinking and enjoying the feast. That's Nourishment's lesson exactly. Feed yourself well, rest, look honestly at conditions, and stay alert for the moment to act.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 1 of 5 Inaction, which stays still

You still have control over the situation. It's time to act in a relaxed way, while keeping an eye on what's happening.

Waiting on the outskirts. It is favorable to hold steady. No fault.

  2. Line 4 of 5 Inaction, which stays still

Any kind of action will only make things worse.

Waiting in blood. Coming out of the pit.

  3. The judgment of 27 Nourishment

Right now you need to take care of your physical and spiritual nourishment, so you have the resources you need in each area, and at the same time help others grow through what you do. Success lies in giving and receiving: take in what is good for you and share it with those around you.

Constancy brings good fortune. Watching the jaws; seeking for oneself what fills the mouth.

  4. Line 2 of 27 Nourishment

Expecting others to sort out your affairs and acting selfishly isn't favorable.

Jaws turned upside down: against the norm. Seeking sustenance from the hill. Setting out brings misfortune.

  5. Line 3 of 27 Nourishment

Watch the balance between your worldly food and your higher food closely: tending only to the first, and overindulging, brings misfortune.

Going against sustenance. Even with constancy, misfortune. For ten years, do not act. Nothing is favorable.

  6. Line 5 of 27 Nourishment

Being aware of your limits in helping others and asking advice on how to do it will bring you moderate achievements, not extraordinary ones, but it's something.

Against the norm. Abiding in constancy brings good fortune. The great river cannot be crossed.

  7. Line 6 of 27 Nourishment

You gain the resources to take care of your own affairs, and you help others get theirs. This brings a great responsibility, but also great success.

From here comes sustenance. Danger; good fortune. It is favorable to cross the great river.

  8. The judgment of 5 Inaction

It's time to wait, not to act. Waiting doesn't mean standing still, though: it's a good time to prepare for the active period that's coming. A calm, relaxed attitude will lead you to success: look at the conditions without lying to yourself, and stay alert so you know when it's time to act. Destiny follows its own course.

There is sincere trust. Shining success. Constancy brings good fortune. It is favorable to cross the great river.
