Nourishment becomes Water

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

Water arrives on water as four lines move, and the jaws now have to feed themselves while crossing a run of hazards. The resulting hexagram, 29 Water, keeps its third and fourth lines still, and those carry the reading. The third says it's time to stop, watch, and move only when you're sure progress will lead somewhere; ask for inner guidance. The fourth adds that obstacles give way now only if you accept help that seems minor but makes the difference. Nourishment fits here as modest sustenance in hard times. Don't refuse small offers of support because they look insignificant. Keep feeding yourself simply, and don't rush ahead out of fear or pride. The resulting hexagram says obstacles may come one after another, but you get past them if you keep moving like a stream, without freezing.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 3 of 29 Water, which stays still

It's time to stop, watch and act only when you're sure that moving forward will lead to success. Ask for inner guidance.

Coming and going: pit and pit. Danger, and depth besides. Entering the bottom of the pit. Do not act.

  2. Line 4 of 29 Water, which stays still

Obstacles will be overcome now only if you open up to help that seems minor but will make the difference.

A jug of wine, a bowl of grain besides, in clay vessels. The simple offering passes in through the window. In the end, no fault.

  3. The judgment of 27 Nourishment

Right now you need to take care of your physical and spiritual nourishment, so you have the resources you need in each area, and at the same time help others grow through what you do. Success lies in giving and receiving: take in what is good for you and share it with those around you.

Constancy brings good fortune. Watching the jaws; seeking for oneself what fills the mouth.

  4. Line 1 of 27 Nourishment

Being ungrateful for what you have and busying yourself envying what others have will hold back your achievements.

You let go of your sacred tortoise and watch my jaw working. Misfortune.

  5. Line 2 of 27 Nourishment

Expecting others to sort out your affairs and acting selfishly isn't favorable.

Jaws turned upside down: against the norm. Seeking sustenance from the hill. Setting out brings misfortune.

  6. Line 5 of 27 Nourishment

Being aware of your limits in helping others and asking advice on how to do it will bring you moderate achievements, not extraordinary ones, but it's something.

Against the norm. Abiding in constancy brings good fortune. The great river cannot be crossed.

  7. Line 6 of 27 Nourishment

You gain the resources to take care of your own affairs, and you help others get theirs. This brings a great responsibility, but also great success.

From here comes sustenance. Danger; good fortune. It is favorable to cross the great river.

  8. The judgment of 29 Water

Just as a stream moves through obstacles and gets past them, following its course without stagnating, you're at a time when obstacles will come one after another, but you'll get past them if you can keep moving. Letting fear paralyze you will only leave you stuck.

There is sincere trust. Only the heart gets through. Going earns esteem.
