Nourishment becomes Small Things

What this change means

The second, third and fifth lines move, and Heaven gathers below while wind drifts above it, promising rain that hasn't come yet. Three moving lines mean the two judgments are read side by side. Nourishment calls for steady, sensible feeding of body and mind, without excess. The resulting hexagram, 9 Small Things, describes a situation that promises success, but not yet: obstacles remain, and for now small actions are the right size. Together they counsel quiet tending. Feed your foundations with modest, regular care while the larger moment ripens. Clear the small obstacles one at a time. Don't overreach or overconsume out of impatience. When the time for larger action does arrive, you'll want to meet it rested and well supplied.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 27 Nourishment

Right now you need to take care of your physical and spiritual nourishment, so you have the resources you need in each area, and at the same time help others grow through what you do. Success lies in giving and receiving: take in what is good for you and share it with those around you.

Constancy brings good fortune. Watching the jaws; seeking for oneself what fills the mouth.

  2. The judgment of 9 Small Things

You're facing a situation that promises success, but it isn't time yet. There are still obstacles on the way that you need to resolve. For now you can take small actions and wait for the right moment to act on a large scale.

Success. Dense clouds and no rain, from my western outskirts.

  3. Line 2 of 27 Nourishment

Expecting others to sort out your affairs and acting selfishly isn't favorable.

Jaws turned upside down: against the norm. Seeking sustenance from the hill. Setting out brings misfortune.

  4. Line 3 of 27 Nourishment

Watch the balance between your worldly food and your higher food closely: tending only to the first, and overindulging, brings misfortune.

Going against sustenance. Even with constancy, misfortune. For ten years, do not act. Nothing is favorable.

  5. Line 5 of 27 Nourishment

Being aware of your limits in helping others and asking advice on how to do it will bring you moderate achievements, not extraordinary ones, but it's something.

Against the norm. Abiding in constancy brings good fortune. The great river cannot be crossed.
