The Fall becomes Going Up

What this change means

Within the earth a tree begins to grow as the second, third and top lines move: The Fall becomes 46 Going Up. With three lines changing, the two judgments are balanced. The first describes erosion, a slow wearing away in which you lose credit with others and lesser people take control, and it asks you to hold back and be generous downward. The second describes a rise that comes as the fruit of dedicated work, and says that seeking out an important person now can bring great success. That's a striking turn, and it hints that the work you did quietly during the hard time is what makes the ascent possible. Don't be shy about asking for the meeting or the support you need. Climb steadily, piling up small things, and stay as giving on the way up as you were when things were bleak.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 23 The Fall

It's a time of obstacles and difficulties when, even if you're right, your words aren't believed. Lesser people who misuse power are on the rise, and you could become their victim. Recognizing this time without trying to push ahead, and being generous and giving toward those beneath you, will help you hold on while circumstances change.

It is not favorable to have somewhere to go.

  2. The judgment of 46 Going Up

You're in a time of rising, and this rise is the fruit of work you've done with dedication. Seeking the help of an important person will bring great success; don't be afraid of that meeting, because everything is favorable now.

Great success. Seeing the great person is of use. Do not worry. Setting out southward brings good fortune.

  3. Line 2 of 23 The Fall

Resources and help aren't enough right now. All you can do is wait for better conditions.

The bed is stripped at the frame. Constancy is destroyed: misfortune.

  4. Line 3 of 23 The Fall

Turning to spiritual resources and inner help will keep adversity away.

    Stripping. No fault.

  5. Line 6 of 23 The Fall

Little by little the adverse situations will give way, and gradually adversity will turn into opportunity.

A great fruit left uneaten. The noble person gains a carriage; the petty person's hut is stripped.
