What this change means
Light sinks into the earth as three lines move, and The Fall becomes 36 Darkness. The two judgments carry equal weight, and they agree on a hard truth: this is a time when the wrong people have influence. The first speaks of obstacles, words that aren't believed and lesser people misusing power; it says don't push ahead, and be generous to those beneath you. The second says that if circumstances force you to live alongside such people, protect yourself, hold on to your integrity, and go unnoticed, without showing your light openly. So lower your profile. Don't display talents that could draw attack, and don't argue with those who won't listen. Keep your values intact in private. However long this stretch feels, hard times pass, and what you preserve now is what you'll build on later.
What to read, in order
Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.
- The judgment of 23 The Fall
It's a time of obstacles and difficulties when, even if you're right, your words aren't believed. Lesser people who misuse power are on the rise, and you could become their victim. Recognizing this time without trying to push ahead, and being generous and giving toward those beneath you, will help you hold on while circumstances change.
It is not favorable to have somewhere to go.
- The judgment of 36 Darkness
It's a dark time: circumstances force you to live alongside the wrong people. If you know how to protect yourself, hold on to your integrity, and go unnoticed, without openly showing your light and your talents, you'll stay safe until better times come. However hard they seem, hard times pass too.
Constancy in hardship is favorable.
- Line 1 of 23 The Fall
Your enemies have the power now and use any means to damage your image, even slander. All you can do is keep your inner strength and wait for better times.
The bed is stripped at the legs. Constancy is destroyed: misfortune.
- Line 3 of 23 The Fall
Turning to spiritual resources and inner help will keep adversity away.
Stripping. No fault.
- Line 6 of 23 The Fall
Little by little the adverse situations will give way, and gradually adversity will turn into opportunity.
A great fruit left uneaten. The noble person gains a carriage; the petty person's hut is stripped.
