What this change means
Thunder rolls beneath heaven as the first and fourth lines move. The fourth leads: you can look at things wisely and shed light where it's dark, and that brings recognition. The first line reminds you where that wisdom starts: not stopping at appearances, but going beyond looking to connect the facts.
The resulting hexagram, 25 Innocence, says that if you act with a pure heart, without hidden motives and without straying from what's right, the blessings of heaven can reach you; otherwise, obstacles follow. Clear seeing and clean intention support each other here. Look honestly, link what you see, and act without ulterior aims. The recognition the fourth line speaks of comes most easily to someone who isn't chasing it. Watch for using your insight to manipulate or to impress; it tends to cloud both your view and your results.
What to read, in order
Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.
- Line 4 of 20 Observing
You can look at things with wisdom and bring light where there is darkness. This will bring you recognition.
Contemplating the light of the kingdom. It is favorable to be the king's guest.
- Line 1 of 20 Observing
It doesn't help to stop at appearances when you observe something. Go beyond simple looking: connect the facts.
Looking like a child. For the petty person, no fault; for the noble person, distress.
- The judgment of 20 Observing
Observe before you act. Right now you're a source of inspiration for others, and at the same time you need to observe those who inspire you. This will let things unfold at the right moment, and perfectly.
Hands washed, the offering not yet made. There is sincere trust, solemn and grave.
- The judgment of 25 Innocence
If you act with a pure heart, free of hidden motives and without straying from what is right, true to original human nature, you'll let the blessings of heaven reach you. Otherwise you'll meet obstacles and your affairs will become difficult.
Great success. Constancy is favorable. If it is not upright, there is calamity. It is not favorable to have somewhere to go.
