Well-Being becomes Right Action

What this change means

Water over Wind: the first and fifth lines move, and Well-Being becomes 48 Right Action, the image of a well. The fifth line leads. Like a ruler who marries his sister into a humbler house, you're asked to join with people who have less than you and support them; this tends to bring blessings. The first line backs it: pull up the grass and its roots come with it, clump by clump, so setting out with others is favored. The resulting hexagram is the warning to heed. Opportunities are on your side, but they won't help if you keep putting off decisions and actions. It isn't about chasing new things; it's about making real use of what you already have. A well serves only when someone draws from it. So act on the generous impulse now, encourage people to help one another, and don't let a good moment go stale.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 5 of 11 Well-Being

Joining with those who are at a disadvantage compared with you, and supporting them, brings you blessings.

Emperor Yi gives his younger sister in marriage. Blessing. Great good fortune.

  2. Line 1 of 11 Well-Being

A season of flourishing: you surround yourself with like-minded people.

The grass is pulled up, and its tangled roots come too, each with its clump. Setting out brings good fortune.

  3. The judgment of 11 Well-Being

A period of well-being, harmony and understanding is coming, and you can enjoy it. People and situations that weren't good for you are moving away, and in their place come people and situations that bring blessings and support. Heaven grants its gifts.

The small goes, the great comes. Good fortune. Success.

  4. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.
