Conflict becomes Union

What this change means

On the earth there is water: the second, fourth and top lines move, and what was a clash becomes a question of alliance. With three moving lines, the starting and resulting judgments stand together. The first says the dispute won't yield to action; it asks for cleverness, acceptance that resolution isn't possible now, and counsel from someone wise.

8 Union, the resulting hexagram, says success lies in joining people aligned with your project, while making sure you have the qualities to carry it out yourself. Combined, the conflict is a signal to find your real allies. Step away from opponents and toward supporters, and be honest about your own readiness. Watch for joining a side just to win the quarrel. The right union is built on shared aims, not on a common enemy.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 6 Conflict

A conflict is arising that can't be solved by action; cleverness works better than force. Recognizing that you can't resolve anything right now, letting events take their course, and seeking the advice of someone wise in this area will help you get out of the conflict.

There is sincere trust, but it is blocked. Caution: stopping halfway brings good fortune; going all the way to the end, misfortune. It is favorable to see the great person. It is not favorable to cross the great river.

  2. The judgment of 8 Union

Right now success lies in joining with people who are aligned with your project and who are a support for you. But it's important that you, too, have the qualities needed to carry it out; that's why you can toss the coins once more to find out whether you have those qualities.

Good fortune. Consult the oracle again: great and lasting constancy. No fault. The restless come from every side. The one who comes late: misfortune.

  3. Line 2 of 6 Conflict

Withdrawing in time, even if it looks cowardly, is the best move right now.

Unable to win the lawsuit. Turning back, slipping away; the people of the town, three hundred households, come to no harm.

  4. Line 4 of 6 Conflict

Accepting the adverse conditions of this moment without fighting them, and staying flexible, will lead you to success in the middle of difficulties.

Unable to win the lawsuit. Turning back, accepting the decree, changing. Calm constancy brings good fortune.

  5. Line 6 of 6 Conflict

Insisting on being right at this moment will only make you lose.

Perhaps a belt of honor is bestowed; before the morning is out, it is stripped away three times.
