Immaturity becomes Conflict

What this change means

Heaven over water, two forces moving apart: the fourth and fifth lines move, and the mountain of 4 Immaturity becomes open sky above a current. The fifth line leads. Owning your gaps and asking for counsel tends to go well; the openness of a child is fortunate. The fourth line warns what happens otherwise: dreaming without acting, hemmed in by your own ignorance, leads to failure.

The resulting hexagram, 6 Conflict, shows the setting: a conflict that action alone can't resolve, where cleverness works better than force. Recognizing you can't settle it right now, letting events take their course, and seeking a wise person's advice help you get out. So the lines and the result agree. Don't fight from ignorance, and don't hide in fantasy either. Find someone wise, listen, and let the situation unfold. Watch for arguing from pride. Good counsel is your way through.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 5 of 4 Immaturity

If you recognize your lack of knowledge in the area of your question and seek advice, you'll get good results.

    A child's ignorance. Good fortune.

  2. Line 4 of 4 Immaturity

Dreaming without acting leads you to failure.

    Ignorance hemmed in. Distress.

  3. The judgment of 4 Immaturity

Be aware that you don't yet have the maturity you need to reach what you're after in the area of your question. Act with humility: ask for guidance, seek advice and counsel, and put what you're told into practice.

Success. I do not go looking for the ignorant youth; the ignorant youth comes looking for me. The first time the oracle is asked, I answer. A second and a third asking is an offense, and an offense gets no answer. Constancy is favorable.

  4. The judgment of 6 Conflict

A conflict is arising that can't be solved by action; cleverness works better than force. Recognizing that you can't resolve anything right now, letting events take their course, and seeking the advice of someone wise in this area will help you get out of the conflict.

There is sincere trust, but it is blocked. Caution: stopping halfway brings good fortune; going all the way to the end, misfortune. It is favorable to see the great person. It is not favorable to cross the great river.
