Immaturity becomes Passivity

What this change means

Earth upon earth, nothing but open, receptive ground: the top and second lines move, and the mountain and the spring of 4 Immaturity both settle flat. The top line leads, asking you to own the results of your actions and correct what's needed, defending rather than striking. The second line, the strong center below, turns that responsibility inward: cultivate yourself, and your worth will show without being pushed. The two lines share a maturity that doesn't need to dominate.

The resulting hexagram, 2 Passivity, says this isn't the time to take the initiative. Let others lead, and keep working at your projects patiently. For a learner, that's natural ground. Watch for wanting to prove yourself by taking charge too soon. Correct quietly, grow quietly, and let your steadiness be the thing others notice.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 6 of 4 Immaturity

Accepting the consequences of your actions and correcting what's needed will help you right now.

Striking the ignorant. Being a raider is not favorable; stopping the raider is favorable.

  2. Line 2 of 4 Immaturity

It's time to cultivate yourself inwardly; then your worth will show on the outside.

Embracing the ignorant: good fortune. Taking a wife: good fortune. The son can hold up the house.

  3. The judgment of 4 Immaturity

Be aware that you don't yet have the maturity you need to reach what you're after in the area of your question. Act with humility: ask for guidance, seek advice and counsel, and put what you're told into practice.

Success. I do not go looking for the ignorant youth; the ignorant youth comes looking for me. The first time the oracle is asked, I answer. A second and a third asking is an offense, and an offense gets no answer. Constancy is favorable.

  4. The judgment of 2 Passivity

This is not the time to take the initiative to achieve things. It's better to let others guide you and to keep at your projects with patience.

Great success. The constancy of a mare is favorable. The noble person has somewhere to go: going ahead, they lose the way; following behind, they find someone to guide them. It is favorable to find friends in the southwest and to lose them in the northeast. Calm constancy brings good fortune.
