Passivity becomes Adapting

What this change means

Thunder in the middle of the lake: three lines move, and the yielding Earth learns that following is also a way of moving. Both judgments speak with equal weight. 2 Passivity says the moment favors being led over leading, and patience over push. The resulting hexagram, 17 Adapting, says it's a time both to lead and to follow: see the place life is asking you to take, act genuinely from there, and your leadership and support tend to grow. Together they ask for a clear-eyed sense of your role. Where are you the one who should follow? Where, perhaps, is a small lead yours to take? Act from the right place, without forcing a bigger part. And when the day is done, rest. Following wisely tends to earn a trust that pushing for the lead never could.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 2 Passivity

This is not the time to take the initiative to achieve things. It's better to let others guide you and to keep at your projects with patience.

Great success. The constancy of a mare is favorable. The noble person has somewhere to go: going ahead, they lose the way; following behind, they find someone to guide them. It is favorable to find friends in the southwest and to lose them in the northeast. Calm constancy brings good fortune.

  2. The judgment of 17 Adapting

It's a time both to lead and to follow. If you can see the place life is asking you to take right now, and act genuinely from wherever you belong, you'll gain more leadership and more support for what you do.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. No fault.

  3. Line 1 of 2 Passivity

Things can decline without anyone noticing. It's time to take precautions so the decline doesn't become total.

Frost underfoot. Firm ice is on its way.

  4. Line 4 of 2 Passivity

Staying away from the noise, out of sight, is the best way to get what you want.

A bag tied at the neck. No fault, no praise.

  5. Line 5 of 2 Passivity

Right now success depends on acting with reserve. Your light shines from within.

A yellow skirt. Great good fortune.
