What this change means
The third line is the hard one in Gradual Progress, and here it moves alone. The goose has reached the high plain, too exposed, and the old text speaks of a husband who marches off and doesn't return. In plain terms: if you try to hurry what needs its own time, the whole advance can collapse. The Mountain below gives way to Earth, and the resulting hexagram, 20 Observing, offers the remedy. Before acting, look. Watch the situation from a little distance, notice who inspires you and whom you may be inspiring, and let the right moment show itself. The line also says it's favorable to fend off raiders, which suggests defending what you already have rather than reaching for more. Slow down, protect your ground, and observe. What you're impatient for tends to arrive more cleanly once you stop pushing it.

- Line 3 of 53 Gradual Progress
If you don't let things unfold at their own pace and try to hurry them, your progress will fail.

- The judgment of 53 Gradual Progress
You'll make progress, and it will come step by step, gradually, through stages that make it lasting and stable. Trying to speed things up will bring delays and obstacles. Keep at it, one rung at a time.
The woman goes to be married: good fortune. Constancy is favorable.
- The judgment of 20 Observing
Observe before you act. Right now you're a source of inspiration for others, and at the same time you need to observe those who inspire you. This will let things unfold at the right moment, and perfectly.
Hands washed, the offering not yet made. There is sincere trust, solemn and grave.
