Lack of Firmness becomes Water

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

Both trigrams turn to Water when the third, fourth and top lines move, pit upon pit, and the reading rests on both judgments. Lack of Firmness says that what you take lightly can come to control you, unless you hold a firm line. The resulting hexagram, 29 Water, describes obstacles coming one after another, which you can get past if you keep moving, while fear only leaves you stuck. Together they suggest that freeing yourself won't happen in one clean break. Expect setbacks, the old temptation returning, the same person reappearing. Don't let that freeze you. Keep setting your limits, again and again, like water that keeps flowing around what's in its way. Each time you hold the line, the next time gets easier.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 44 Lack of Firmness

You're surrounded by unsuitable people or situations. You know it, but you think you have the power to control them and don't take them very seriously; it may even be a bad habit. If you don't pay attention and set firm limits, they'll take control over you and you won't be able to pull away.

The woman is strong. Do not take her as a wife.

  2. The judgment of 29 Water

Just as a stream moves through obstacles and gets past them, following its course without stagnating, you're at a time when obstacles will come one after another, but you'll get past them if you can keep moving. Letting fear paralyze you will only leave you stuck.

There is sincere trust. Only the heart gets through. Going earns esteem.

  3. Line 3 of 44 Lack of Firmness

You know adverse conditions or people exist and you can recognize them, but you're tempted to let them influence you. It will take a great effort to set them aside.

Buttocks without skin; the walk falters. Danger. No great fault.

  4. Line 4 of 44 Lack of Firmness

For now it's better to keep adverse people close, as long as you know how to set limits with them; they may be useful to you at some point.

In the wrapping there is no fish. Setting off brings misfortune.

  5. Line 6 of 44 Lack of Firmness

Your distance from unsuitable people makes you look proud and aloof, but that's better than getting involved with them.

Meeting with the horns. Distress. No fault.
