Darkness becomes Conflict

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

Every line changes: the light buried in the earth becomes Heaven over Water, two forces going opposite ways. With all six lines moving, the resulting hexagram, 6 Conflict, gives the reading. A conflict is arising that action can't solve; cleverness works better than force. Accept that it can't be settled right now, let things unfold, and look for counsel from someone who knows this ground well. Coming from Darkness, the temptation may be to finally fight back after so long. This movement advises against a frontal battle. Think the beginning through before you commit to anything. Watch for being drawn into a dispute that only feeds the people who caused the dark. Patience and good counsel serve you better than confrontation.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 6 Conflict

A conflict is arising that can't be solved by action; cleverness works better than force. Recognizing that you can't resolve anything right now, letting events take their course, and seeking the advice of someone wise in this area will help you get out of the conflict.

The wounded light on the southern hunt: the great chief is taken. Constancy must not be hurried.

  6. Line 4 of 36 Darkness

You'll be allowed to see the causes of the hard situations you're facing. This will help you act quickly and withdraw to safe ground before adversity takes complete control.

It enters the left side of the belly; it reaches the heart of the wounded light and goes out through the courtyard gate.

  7. Line 5 of 36 Darkness

For now you can't withdraw to better circumstances, so you have to stay where you are, with your mind fixed on your goal and a low profile so you don't draw attention.
