What Lasts becomes Transition

What this change means

Fire stands above Water as the third and top lines move, and nothing is quite settled yet. The top line leads: always acting, never pausing to reflect or rest, ends in exhaustion and paralysis. The third line warns that if outside circumstances grow larger than your dreams, they'll take power over you, and your steadiness will slip. The resulting hexagram, 64 Transition, says things are coming together for success, but some pieces haven't fallen into place, and mistakes born of immaturity can still pull you off course. Both lines point to the same weakness: losing yourself in the rush. Slow down enough to see clearly. Keep your purpose larger than the noise around you, check each piece before moving it, and don't let the closeness of the goal make you careless.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 6 of 32 What Lasts

If you're always acting without giving yourself time to reflect and rest, you'll end up exhausted and stuck.

    Shaking duration. Misfortune.

  2. Line 3 of 32 What Lasts

If you let outside circumstances grow bigger than your dreams and projects, they'll end up gaining power over you.

Not making one's virtue last; perhaps shame will follow. Constancy brings distress.

  3. The judgment of 32 What Lasts

This moment asks you for action, not stillness. It asks you to have clear goals to head toward and to act in line with them. That way you'll achieve things, and your achievements will keep growing and will last.

Success. No fault. Constancy is favorable. It is favorable to have somewhere to go.

  4. The judgment of 64 Transition

Things are coming together so that success can arrive and you can take on great projects, but some things still haven't fallen into place. So stay alert, so you don't make mistakes born of immaturity, or you'll drift from your goals. This can happen even after you've gotten what you want: you stop, you hesitate, and mistakes happen.

Success. The little fox has nearly crossed and wets its tail. Nothing is favorable.
