What this change means

Only the third line moves, and Wind under the mountain becomes Water: a spring breaking out at the mountain's base. This line looks at how you try to fix things. Past rigidity has brought loss, and holding on to that same rigidity to repair it won't work either. The old text admits a little regret but no great fault: the effort to set things right is sound, even if it's clumsy. The movement opens onto 4 Immaturity, which asks you to see that you don't yet have the maturity your goal requires, and to act with humility, seeking guidance and putting what you learn into practice. That's the honest step here. If the old firmness keeps failing, ask someone who knows more. Listen without defending your method. A beginner's humility can repair what an expert's stiffness broke.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 3 of 18 Loss, Then Gain

Acting too rigidly in the past has led you to loss, but holding on to that rigidity to fix it won't help either.

Setting right what the father spoiled. A little regret; no great fault.

  2. The judgment of 18 Loss, Then Gain

You've made mistakes that have brought you into decline; still, admitting it and making the corrections needed will lead you back to success. Take time to reflect on what caused the loss and, once you've acted, give success time to arrive.

Great success. It is favorable to cross the great river. Three days before the first day, three days after the first day.

  3. The judgment of 4 Immaturity

Be aware that you don't yet have the maturity you need to reach what you're after in the area of your question. Act with humility: ask for guidance, seek advice and counsel, and put what you're told into practice.

Success. I do not go looking for the ignorant youth; the ignorant youth comes looking for me. The first time the oracle is asked, I answer. A second and a third asking is an offense, and an offense gets no answer. Constancy is favorable.
