What this change means

Water settles over the lake as the second and fourth lines move, and both trigrams change. The two lines speak about the same thing from different angles: the people you keep close. The fourth, which leads, warns against staying tied to situations and people out of habit; a gain can turn sour if you cling to it, while sincere trust and clarity keep you safe. The second reminds you that clinging to what is small can cost you what is solid, so choose your circle with great care. The movement arrives at 60 Thrift, a time to save energy, time and means so that you meet what's coming prepared. Relationships are part of that budget. Spend your attention on the bonds that nourish you, withdraw it gently from those that don't, and you'll meet the coming challenges with more in reserve.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 4 of 17 Adapting

Don't tie yourself to situations and people out of comfort or habit. Knowing how to choose who you keep around you, and stepping away from those you can tell aren't right, brings success.

Following brings a catch. Even with constancy, misfortune. There is sincere trust on the way; with clarity, what fault could there be?

  2. Line 2 of 17 Adapting

Choosing very carefully who you surround yourself with makes your projects succeed.

Cling to the boy, lose the grown man.

  3. The judgment of 17 Adapting

It's a time both to lead and to follow. If you can see the place life is asking you to take right now, and act genuinely from wherever you belong, you'll gain more leadership and more support for what you do.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. No fault.

  4. The judgment of 60 Thrift

It's a time to conserve your time, energy and resources so you're ready for what lies ahead. If you do, when challenges arrive you'll be prepared and will overcome them easily.

Success. Bitter measure cannot be kept up with constancy.
