Adapting becomes Right Action

What this change means

Four lines move, and Thunder under the lake becomes Wind under water, the image of a well. With so much in motion, the reading looks to the two lines that stay still in 48 Right Action, the fifth and the sixth. The fifth says you recognize the opportunities around you and feel the drive to act on them. The sixth adds that you have the abilities to seize the moment and the wish to contribute to others. That's a strong position, and the resulting hexagram names its one danger: being in the right place at the right time is wasted if you keep postponing decisions. The way you've adapted, listened and sorted your bonds has brought you here. Now the task is to draw from the well you already have, not to look for a new one. Act on what's in front of you, and share it.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 5 of 48 Right Action, which stays still

You recognize the opportunities around you and feel motivated and determined to act, which will bring success.

The well is clear: the cold spring is drunk.

  2. Line 6 of 48 Right Action, which stays still

You have all the talents and abilities to act and seize the moment, and you also want to contribute to those around you: there will be success.

Water is drawn from the well: do not cover it. There is sincere trust. Great good fortune.

  3. The judgment of 17 Adapting

It's a time both to lead and to follow. If you can see the place life is asking you to take right now, and act genuinely from wherever you belong, you'll gain more leadership and more support for what you do.

Great success. Constancy is favorable. No fault.

  4. Line 1 of 17 Adapting

Being able to yield, listen and accept opinions different from yours will lead you to success.

The post changes. Constancy brings good fortune. Going out the gate to deal with others bears fruit.

  5. Line 2 of 17 Adapting

Choosing very carefully who you surround yourself with makes your projects succeed.

Cling to the boy, lose the grown man.

  6. Line 3 of 17 Adapting

People or situations that weren't good for you are moving away. Don't regret it: this clears the way for what is new and right for you to come closer.

Cling to the grown man, lose the boy. Following, what is sought is found. Abiding in constancy is favorable.

  7. Line 4 of 17 Adapting

Don't tie yourself to situations and people out of comfort or habit. Knowing how to choose who you keep around you, and stepping away from those you can tell aren't right, brings success.

Following brings a catch. Even with constancy, misfortune. There is sincere trust on the way; with clarity, what fault could there be?

  8. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.
