Decline becomes Union

What this change means

Water spreads over the Earth as the fourth and top lines move, and the outcome is 8 Union. The top line leads: stagnation is overturned, and joy follows the blockage, opening a stage of growth and harmony. The fourth line supports it: there is a rightful mandate, you act without fault, and companions share in the blessing; honest conduct sees you through and is rewarded. The resulting hexagram places success in joining with people aligned with your project, who give you support, while also making sure you have the qualities to carry it out. So as the climate improves, look to your partnerships. The companions who share the blessing are the ones to build with. Choose them carefully, commit openly, and check honestly what you bring. A union of people who each contribute is the natural fruit of a stagnation well endured.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 6 of 12 Decline

After a period of stagnation comes a stage of growth, well-being and harmony.

Stagnation is overturned. First stagnation, then joy.

  2. Line 4 of 12 Decline

If you act genuinely and with inner integrity, you'll come out of any situation well and be rewarded.

There is a mandate. No fault. Companions share in the blessing.

  3. The judgment of 12 Decline

You're surrounded by adverse people and situations. Avoid getting involved with those people, no matter what they offer you. Circumstances aren't good for acting or making decisions; it's time to withdraw to a safe place and wait for conditions to change. It's time to keep a low profile.

Stagnation: these are not worthy people. The constancy of the noble person is not favorable. The great goes, the small comes.

  4. The judgment of 8 Union

Right now success lies in joining with people who are aligned with your project and who are a support for you. But it's important that you, too, have the qualities needed to carry it out; that's why you can toss the coins once more to find out whether you have those qualities.

Good fortune. Consult the oracle again: great and lasting constancy. No fault. The restless come from every side. The one who comes late: misfortune.
