What this change means

Water over wood, the well's image: four lines move, and the second and fifth lines of 48 Right Action stay still and guide the reading. The second says you have what success needs, but you've let yourself go slack and stopped stretching, which makes it hard to keep what you achieve. The fifth says seeing the chances around you, and feeling the drive and will to take them, is what brings success. From Treading Carefully, then, the movement turns to how you use what you have. The two still lines show both sides: the risk of complacency, and the strength of fresh resolve. So shake off the slackness. Don't wait for new chances when the ones in front of you are good. Recommit, decide, and act, keeping the care that got you past the tiger, but without the hesitation.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 2 of 48 Right Action, which stays still

You have good qualities for success, but you've grown slack and stopped pushing yourself; this makes it hard to hold on to what you achieve.

Down in the well, shooting at minnows. The jar is broken and leaks.

  2. Line 5 of 48 Right Action, which stays still

You recognize the opportunities around you and feel motivated and determined to act, which will bring success.

The well is clear: the cold spring is drunk.

  3. The judgment of 10 Treading Carefully

You're facing a difficult situation. If you know how to conduct yourself properly, moving with awareness and gentleness, even people who could be rivals and stand in your way will give ground, and may even become your allies.

Stepping on the tiger's tail; it does not bite. Success.

  4. Line 1 of 10 Treading Carefully

You're in a position out of view that will let you focus on your projects.

A plain step. Going: no fault.

  5. Line 3 of 10 Treading Carefully

By overestimating your abilities, you may take on tasks you're not prepared for.

The one-eyed can see, the lame can walk. Stepping on the tiger's tail, and it bites. Misfortune. A warrior acts for the great prince.

  6. Line 4 of 10 Treading Carefully

You're getting involved in a risky venture, but your inner strength and firmness will help you succeed.

Stepping on the tiger's tail. Wary, wary; in the end, good fortune.

  7. Line 6 of 10 Treading Carefully

If you watch for the favorable signs to know when to act, and then act decisively, you'll succeed.

Looking back over the steps taken, examining the signs. If it turns back on itself: great good fortune.

  8. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.
