Small Things becomes Thrift

What this change means

Two lines move, the third and the top, and between them sits the whole lesson of measure. The sixth line leads: you've reached what you wanted through gradual work, yet you're told not to rest on it, and not to set out while the moon is nearly full. The third line names the danger of ignoring that: pushing ahead at any cost brings bigger obstacles from outside and quarrels with those closest to you. Lake below, water above, and Small Things becomes 60 Thrift. The resulting hexagram asks you to conserve time, energy and resources so you're ready for what's ahead; prepared that way, challenges become easier to meet. Read together, these lines warn against spending your success on a reckless next push. Set limits for yourself. Save some of what you've earned, and let the next step wait until you have the reserves for it.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 6 of 9 Small Things

You get what you want thanks to step-by-step work. Still, don't rest on your laurels: you have to stay constant and keep working little by little.

The rain has come, the rest has come. Virtue has piled up like a load. The wife's constancy is in danger. The moon is nearly full. For the noble person, setting out brings misfortune.

  2. Line 3 of 9 Small Things

  3. The judgment of 9 Small Things

You're facing a situation that promises success, but it isn't time yet. There are still obstacles on the way that you need to resolve. For now you can take small actions and wait for the right moment to act on a large scale.

Success. Dense clouds and no rain, from my western outskirts.

  4. The judgment of 60 Thrift

It's a time to conserve your time, energy and resources so you're ready for what lies ahead. If you do, when challenges arrive you'll be prepared and will overcome them easily.

Success. Bitter measure cannot be kept up with constancy.
