Union becomes Abundance

What this change means

Fire rises below and thunder above as the first, third, fourth and fifth lines move, and the gathering swells into a time of fullness. Two lines hold still in the new figure, and they give the advice. The second says that though you're resolved and conditions favor you, the wrong people block your way; keep doing what's right and don't be drawn off course. The top warns that pride may delay your success.

The resulting hexagram, 55 Abundance, describes growing toward plenty that lasts a while and then wanes, to be enjoyed calmly and let go of calmly. So the alliance prospers, but not everyone around you is on your side. Stay on course, keep your ego small, and enjoy what comes. Watch for letting a hostile person or your own vanity pull you off track at the high point.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. Line 2 of 55 Abundance, which stays still

Although you're resolved and conditions are good for getting what you want, the wrong people are standing in your way. If you keep doing what's right and don't let yourself be pulled off course, you'll succeed.

Full is the awning: at noon the Dipper is seen. Going earns suspicion and harm. If there is sincere trust that unfolds, good fortune.

  2. Line 6 of 55 Abundance, which stays still

Your pride may get in the way of what you want and delay your success.

Full is the house, the home screened over. Peering through the door: silence, no one there. For three years no one is seen. Misfortune.

  3. The judgment of 8 Union

Right now success lies in joining with people who are aligned with your project and who are a support for you. But it's important that you, too, have the qualities needed to carry it out; that's why you can toss the coins once more to find out whether you have those qualities.

Good fortune. Consult the oracle again: great and lasting constancy. No fault. The restless come from every side. The one who comes late: misfortune.

  4. Line 1 of 8 Union

    The right help will come.

There is sincere trust: join with them. No fault. Sincere trust fills the earthen jar; in the end something more arrives. Good fortune.

  5. Line 3 of 8 Union

You tend to choose badly the people you join with. Avoid shallow alliances that won't bear good fruit.

Joining with those who are not the right ones.

  6. Line 4 of 8 Union

Staying loyal to the people you ally with, and showing that alliance openly, helps you right now.

Joining outwardly. Constancy brings good fortune.

  7. Line 5 of 8 Union

Those who can help you will come naturally. Don't keep seeking help from someone who is reluctant to give it.

Open union. The king hunts, driving from three sides, and lets the game in front escape. The townspeople are not alarmed. Good fortune.

  8. The judgment of 55 Abundance

You're growing toward a period of satisfaction and abundance. It will last for a while, and when it ends, stay calm, without sadness or worry. Enjoy it while it lasts, and when it wanes, keep your spirits up and enjoy what you've achieved.

Success. The king reaches it. Do not grieve: the noonday sun is fitting.
