Immaturity becomes Renewal

Starting hexagram
Resulting hexagram

What this change means

Every line moves, and the whole figure turns over: water becomes fire, the mountain becomes a lake, and 4 Immaturity gives way to the image of fire in the middle of the lake. When all six lines change, the resulting hexagram, 49 Renewal, speaks on its own. It describes a time of renewal, like an animal shedding its skin. Be willing to change and to try fresh approaches. Things tend to go well when each step comes at its proper moment, and when you weigh carefully what needs to change and what doesn't. Let go of what no longer does its job, and make room for the new.

For someone who began as a learner, this can be a kind of passage. The old self that needed so much guidance can be shed. Watch for holding on to that old identity out of habit. Change with care, and step into what comes next.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

You're in a time of renewal, like shedding a skin. Open yourself to change and to new ways of doing things. Success lies in taking each step at exactly the right moment, and in weighing what needs to change and what doesn't, what is no longer doing its job. Don't be afraid to let it go: you need to make room for the new to arrive.

  2. The judgment of 4 Immaturity

  4. Line 2 of 4 Immaturity

It's time to cultivate yourself inwardly; then your worth will show on the outside.

Embracing the ignorant: good fortune. Taking a wife: good fortune. The son can hold up the house.

  5. Line 3 of 4 Immaturity

To get what you want, don't submit to strong personalities who belittle you.

Do not take this woman: at the sight of a man of gold, she is no longer her own. Nothing is favorable.

  6. Line 4 of 4 Immaturity

Dreaming without acting leads you to failure.

    Ignorance hemmed in. Distress.

  7. Line 5 of 4 Immaturity

If you recognize your lack of knowledge in the area of your question and seek advice, you'll get good results.

    A child's ignorance. Good fortune.

  8. Line 6 of 4 Immaturity

Accepting the consequences of your actions and correcting what's needed will help you right now.
