Activity becomes Right Action

What this change means

Water over wood, the image of a well: three lines move, and Heaven's raw strength becomes something that draws up and supplies. Both judgments count the same. 1 Activity brings creative energy and the qualities to carry a project through. The resulting hexagram, 48 Right Action, says opportunities are on your side, but they're worth nothing if you keep postponing decisions and action. It's about using what you already have, not chasing what's new, or there will be loss. Together they make a pointed message. The drive is there; the resources are there; the risk is delay. So stop circling. Look at what's within reach, decide, and put it to work. Encourage the people around you, and help each other. A well is only useful when someone lowers the bucket. Being in the right place at the right time still asks you to act.

What to read, in order

Marked ● is what Zhu Xi's tradition puts at the center for this number of moving lines.

  1. The judgment of 1 Activity

The creative principle. Activity. New beginnings, flourishing, and the qualities you need to carry any undertaking or project through to success.

    Great success. Constancy is favorable.

  2. The judgment of 48 Right Action

You're at a moment when opportunities are on your side. But if you don't know how to use them because you keep putting off decisions and actions, being in the right place at the right time won't do you any good. It's not about looking for new things but about making use of what you have, or there will be loss.

The town is changed, the well is not. Nothing lost, nothing gained. They come and go, and draw from the well. Nearly there, the rope does not yet reach the well; if the jar breaks, misfortune.

  3. Line 1 of 1 Activity

It's not yet time to act.

A dragon under the water. Do not act.

  4. Line 4 of 1 Activity

It's time to decide whether you want to keep moving forward or stop.

Perhaps it leaps in the abyss. No fault.

  5. Line 6 of 1 Activity

Pride may be your worst enemy right now.

A dragon that climbs too high. There is regret.
